Scenario planning considers several plausible future pathways rather than reducing uncertainty to a single forecast. Its purpose is less to predict the future correctly than to prepare for change and identify decisions that remain sensible under different conditions.
Choose meaningful uncertainties
A company exploring a new market might face uncertainty about technology maturity, customer demand, regulation, or competitor behavior. Focus on factors that could materially affect the decision and remain genuinely unresolved.
Avoid a simple good-future/bad-future story
Two dramatic narratives are not enough. Specify conditions, plausible causal developments, and early indicators for each scenario so they can inform action.
Limitations
Memorable stories do not exhaust all possible futures. Avoid assigning precise probabilities without a defensible basis. Revisit scenarios as evidence arrives, using them to adjust commitments and contingency plans.
